Week two at cobnut corner

Another sunny weekend. After some hacking and pulling we decided to clear the square area in front of the raised bed we did last week. We hired the strimmer and cleared the grass. We saw a youtube video that said that it would be easier to dig if a little wet so we threw over some water from the water butt before lunch. Then Mr Cobnut forked it up while I shook and pulled up the weeds and roots and picked out the stones into a bucket. Some roots went really deep so was hard to get them all but we plan to have another dig around at some point. For now we covered with some black tarp we bought at B&Q. The area looks about twice the area that other people are using for one bed so I think we’ll mark a path all the way round and then put a path in the middle to make two beds. We really are just making this up as we go along but it feels like progress nonetheless.

Our lovely neighbour gave us some gorgeous courgettes and runner beans! I made my favourite courgette cake and a runner bean slaw for Monday’s packed lunch. Thank you!

Wildlife watch: Last week we saw a mouse and a frog. This week we saw stripey caterpillars and a small gekko! As well as the usual butterflies and bees.
